What is blogging? Blogging is just writing content about an event, situation, topic, etc. As a business owner, you’ll blog about a topic that will position you as an authority in your field. For example: If you own a fitness business, then you should blog about fitness. Therefore your brand is positioned as the authority in that industry. Your blog should demonstrate empathy and authority. In your blog, you need to relate to your audience and show them that you are the authority in your industry by informing them in your blog. Here are some reasons you should be blogging:

SEO Ranking

Search engines love long-form content and blogs are perfect for this. In your blogs, you can strategically use keywords to make sure that your site ranks for those keywords. Before you start blogging, Google your primary keywords and view the top 10 results on the search engine results page. View those blogs and see how many words they shoot for, you should shoot for this number too. Make sure that the blogs are unique and interesting because the longer the visitor is on that website the higher Google will rank it.

Content Generation

Nowadays, if your business isn’t producing massive amounts of amazing content, you will lose. Blogging is an easy way to generate valuable content for your business. Now that we know why you need a blog, I want to go over exactly how you can create one and how to create articles for your blog. These things I am going to recommend can be done by you or your developer. Here it is, step-by-step:

Starting A Blog

  1. First, you need to pick an overall topic that your blog will be about. For a Fitness company, the overall topic would be Fitness. Choose a topic that best suits your business.
  2. Create a name for your blog. Make sure that the name you create makes sense and sounds relevant to the topic of your blog.
  3. Get your blog online. You have a couple of options here depending on where you are in your business. Here are some situations you might be in:
  • If you already have a website, get with your developer and strategize on how to integrate a blog with your current website.
  • If you used a website builder to create your current website, most website builders allow you to add a blog to your site. Just go on YouTube or their platform and look up “How To Create A Blog On This Platform”. So if you use Wix, search up: How to create a blog on Wix. Follow those steps to create your blog.
  • If you don’t have a website for your business then you can get with a freelancer, agency, or website builder to get a website for your business. Go to the website module to learn more about that process.
  • Lastly, if you don’t have a website and you don’t want one, you can always create your blogs on other platforms such as Facebook. There’s nothing wrong with this and whenever you decide to get a website, you can always import those blogs onto your site.

Optimize Your Blog

  • Make sure to optimize the look and feel of your blog. There are over 600 million blogs in the world and a great way for your blog to stand out is with great design, readability, and responsiveness.

  • Customize your blog to make it look unique and not like a copy and paste template.

  • Make sure the actual articles that you create are high quality and easy to read for your audience (I’ll go over this more in the next section: Writing Articles).

  • MAKE SURE YOUR BLOG IS RESPONSIVE ACROSS ALL DEVICES. This simply means that it is easy to consume and looks good on Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, and Mobile Phones. Be careful with templates because many templates are not mobile responsive.

  • Make it easy for your visitors to come back. In your blog, there should be multiple CTAs for your visitors to like, comment, share, and subscribe to your blog. If you don’t have this, you are missing out on a huge opportunity. Get with your developer or watch YouTube find out how to get this done on your site builder. You need to be collecting these emails.

Writing Articles

Think before you write! Make sure that when you write a blog, it’s for a specific purpose. If you write something later in the article that doesn’t pertain to that purpose, get it out. Only valuable and purposeful content needs to be written in your blog. Answer these three questions before writing your blog:

  • What do you want to tell your readers/what central question do you want to answer for your readers?
  • What’s the main purpose of your article?
  • What do you want your readers to do after reading your article?

Devise a structure for your articles. It’s a good idea to pre-define the structure of your articles so that whenever you are writing, you have parameters to guide your writing. This also keeps all the articles in your blog relatively similar to each other; making it easier to consume. An example of this would be:

  • Start off with an introduction to the article where you introduce your topic
  • Create the main body of your article
  • End with a conclusion where you summarize your main points and draw a conclusion with a CTA. (usually to comment, like, share, and subscribe)

Here are some other tips you should follow when writing articles to create the best experience for your readers:

  • Learn how to write like a professional writer. This may seem obvious, but it is very important and a skill that you need to develop or hire someone to do it for you. The whole purpose of a blog is to provide information or entertainment to whoever is reading it. If you don’t have good writing skills, you will not maintain your viewer’s interest, and they WILL leave. Start developing this skill by practicing these writing skills:
  • Use proper spelling and grammar in your writing. If you already have great spelling and grammar writing skills, congratulations! If this is something you struggle with, don’t worry. I used to struggle with it too. Try using software like Grammarly. They will do all of the corrections for you, and they have a free plan
  • Write useful headings in your articles. Unfortunately, many readers don’t read every single word written in an article. But that’s okay, we want to make it as easy for them as possible to find what they are looking for. We can accomplish this by creating useful headings in our articles. It’s a good idea to use keywords when it makes sense in these headings too.
  • Use related keywords in your articles. While yes we want to entertain and educate our readers with our blog, we also want it to provide a direct advantage for your business. If you are hosting your blog on your website, using keywords in your blog is a must. Remember, your website needs to be optimized for search engines, and a great way to easily improve your website’s SEO is with keywords. Don’t overuse them though, make sure that wherever you are using them, it makes sense.
  • In your articles, make sure to link to existing content on your website. For example, if a Fitness business is creating an article on Fat Loss and in the article they mention another article titled “Why Dieting Helps You Lose Fat”, they need to link to that article with those words. This is called an “in-line” link. In many site builders, all you have to do is highlight the text you want to link from, click the link icon, and paste the link of the other article. Easy.
